Banana + Avocado=YUM

I have been working on blending foods together for little Aiden to give him some more options in food. My first attempt was his two favorites Avocado and Banana.. Yummy.. he loves it. Back to the kitchen today to create a few more options for him..
I love making his foods for him. I love looking in the freezer and seeing the freezer bags full of yummy goodness, sweet potato, squash, pears, peas, carrots, peaches.
I am going to continue blending flavors together, one of the first things I want to do is make apple sauce, and blend flavors together with apples... the possibilities.. hahaha :)

PEACHES for Aiden

Peaches Yum yum yum. There are a few ways you can transform this peach into delicious puree for your wee little one. I used the steam method since I have a steamer... but you can do it in the oven as well..

First things first get washing.. wash your hands, wash the fruit and now you are all set to go. I took a paring knife and sliced an X into the skin of the peach, then I popped it into the steamer for 15 min or until soft. Take out and then peel ( scoring the X into the peel should make peeling easier). Then slice in half remove the pit and let the peaches cool. I use an immersion blender to puree, I have a beautiful Kitchen aid Blender, but I hate cleaning it after I use it, so I opt for the immersion blender. Puree food until you reach the desired consistency, Freeze in Ice Cube trays and hope your little one Enjoys!

I am looking forward to doing some fruit blends now that we have made and tried a variety of fruit.

Butternut Squash Home Made Baby Food

Guess what? I made a batch of Butter nut Squash puree and it turned out great, I just wanted to share the process of making this puree for your little wee babies!
Step One: Select your produce, I stoped by the vegetable stand on Saturday and picked up 3 butternut Squash. Total money spent $2.97.

Step two: Wash the squash, I use a vegetable brush and really scrub and get all the dirt and nasties of the veg.

Step three: I cut the squash length ways..look how pretty... now my 4 year old son who was playing on the other side of the counter with his dinky cars kept looking up with a questioning look on his face when I would stop and take a picture...I can just imagine the the thought process...my mom is crazy!!

Step four: with a spoon, simply scoop out the seeds and place in the compost
Step five: Get a baking sheet and lay the squash flesh side down. Then pour about 1 cup of water (just enough to cover the bottom of the pan) in the pan. Place cookie sheet in a preheated oven of 35o * cook for about 30-40 min .
Step six: Remove from oven and let cool .

Step Seven: Scoop out the flesh of the squash, I simply use a dessert spoon. Look at all that yellow goodness all from one of the squash.
Step eight: Puree with an immersion blender, I added formula to the mixture to get the consistency that I was looking for. You can make it as thick or thin as your baby likes by adding formula or breast milk

Step nine: When you reach the consistency you want simply poor into cube trays or portion into freezer bags and freeze.
TIP: Always label your freezer bags when it comes to baby food with the date and what is in the bag be it squash or sweet potato, keep an eye on the dates and rotate your food supply by date.

Ta Da..... It really is the simple things

Aiden trying Butternut Squash... He liked it!! he would most definitely choose pears over squash...

Home Made Baby Food

Aiden is a few days shy of 4 months and we have started him on baby food. His first food was Avocado. I simply Peel and de-pit a ripe avocado, put it in the blender and puree until you reach the texture you are wanting. We gave only a small bit the first time and simply froze the remaining puree in Ice Cube Trays and when frozen I then put the cubes in a freezer bag marked the contents and date.
The Avocado was Smooth and Creamy and Aiden enjoyed every bite..

With Seamus and Jacob there was no decision over the convenience of prepared store bought baby foods. When Jacob developed allergies we started to question and look closely at the store bought items we consumed. I started to make a lot of foods from scratch, breads, sweets, and homemade meals.

So this time around with Aiden there was no question I am going to prepare all his food at home. With choosing to prepare his baby food at home I have complete control over what he is consuming, the foods will retain more nutrients, No chemicals or preservative. Also Aiden will get a taste of real foods from his first bite, less waste I will not have to throw away partially eaten jars of food. You can cook what you know your baby will eat, prolong the life of your homemade food in the freezer. Another added bonus is that it cost less to prepare baby food at home.
